The Experience

Experience an introduction to the South Chilcotin Mountains on a half-day or full-day guided hike.

The Half Day Hike is a teaser of what the local hiking trails have to offer. Hike through meandering forested trails, watch for local wildlife and identify local flora. Stunning views of the Bridge River Valley may also be enjoyed as your guide shares bits of local history relating to the historic mining communities that dot the valley below, as well as stories about the indigenous territory and peoples.

The Full Day Hike leads you into the backcountry to get a good-sized taste of what it is like to be in the high alpine mountains. Your group may experience vibrant meadows of wildflowers, babbling brooks, thriving forests and wildlife such as marmots, deer and a myriad of birds. You’ll stop for lunch along the way at one of our scenic rest stops and give your legs a break before continuing on your journey and eventually returning to Tyax Adventures base.

It’s a great idea to spend a night or two in the area before/after joining us for a trip. Our base (and where you will start your trip) is located at Tyax Lodge.

    • A Shuttle from our Tyax Adventures base to the location for the beginning of your hiking adventure (shuttle as necessary).

    • An experienced hiking guide to guide you on your adventure and also provide commentary on the local flora and fauna along your journey.

    • A Shuttle back to our Tyax Adventures base at the end of our hike (shuttle as necessary).

    • Full Day Hike: A delicious packed lunch for your day out riding. Includes Sandwich, piece of fruit and slice/muesli bar and/or baked energy snack (let us know if you have any allergies,/dietary requirements as we’re happy to cater for these).

    Hiking – Fitness Level

    Level 1:
    You exercise weekly and are reasonably fit. You could hike at a comfortable pace for 3 – 4 hours including hiking through some hilly terrain

    Level 2:
    You exercise 2 or 3 times a week with a focus on fitness. You could hike up to 6 hours a day at a moderate pace, including 1.5/3 hours of hilly and at times steep mountainous terrain ( for multiple days )

    Level 3:
    You exercise 3 or 4 times a week and are very fit. You could hike up 8-10 hours a day at a good pace, including 2+ hours of hilly and at times steep mountainous terrain at a time (for multiple days).

FAQs

  • Yes, so come prepared to do so with a suitably sized backpack-recommend 20 litre pack as a minimum.

  • Yes. You must have a good amount of experience mountain biking and be a strong intermediate rider at minimum (see our self rating scale here).

    Riders must be comfortable with changing gears, braking, mounting and dismounting their bike in uneven terrain.

    Riders should have the ability to pedal and/or walk with their bike uphill for short to long periods of time, and they must be comfortable descending moderately technical downhill sections. Riders must be able to ride in control at all times.

  • The trails are considered backcountry and remote in nature. The riding overall is cross-country/all mountain in style.

    You can expect a mixture of the following:

    • Rolling single track terrain made up of some ups and downs, combined with some flatter sections of trail-sandy in nature the closer you get to the valley,

    • Occasional short up hills that require a good base level of fitness, and a burst of effort to ride or a small hike-a-bike,

    • If starting from Warner Lake – sections of somewhat technically challenging riding along the rocky shores of two alpine lakes, and across some rock slides. Requires good bike handling skills and good concentration,

    • Some short sections of single track that can be a little off camber and/or slightly exposed.

    • The usual trail hazards, such as roots and rocks.

  • You will need only the usual biking essentials that you typically wear.

    But please note some recommendations below regarding your helmet, bike shorts, biking shoes and body armor so that you come best prepared:

    • Full faced helmet is not recommended

    • Durable and comfortable mountain bike shorts. Lycra shorts are not practical for a backcountry experience.

    • Mountain bike specific shoes. Low cut, light weight cross country style mountain bike shoes are not recommended. Bring shoes that provide a good amount of ankle support, and that have a solid sole.

    • Body armor is not recommended. However, if you feel more confident wearing it you are welcome to pack it. You will be responsible for carrying it at all times.

  • We strongly recommend you bring a dual-suspension (fork at the front and shock in the rear) mountain bike designed for cross-country/all mountain trails that has hydraulic disk breaks, not V-Brakes. Downhill style bikes and fat bikes are not recommended.

    Your bike should be well maintained and ideally recently serviced. The working condition of the brakes (including the amount of brake pads remaining), the shifting of gears, state of the tires, bolt tightness, cable housings, and derailleur alignment should all be good.
